Todays Movie Review- JUNO

I have been awaiting this day. To right a review for one of my favorite movies. Juno directed by Jason Reitman.



From already acclaimed writer, Diablo cody, Juno tells the story of Juno Macguff, a 16 year old sassy, yet likeable teenager who gets bored and decides to have sex with her best frend Paulie Bleeker. Not knowing she would end up with a bun in the oven.



Diablo cody has a wonderul story behind her. Before she wrote this movie, she was a stripper who worked on Amateur Night at the local strip club. In her spare time she loved to write. She also had a blog called the Pussy Ranch which was mainly about the Sex industry. But here's the twist, one day Producer Mason Novak, came across her blog and he loved her style of writing, so he e-mailed her and urged her to attempt to write a script, and that's where the lovely story of Juno came to be.

Director Jason Reitman gives us a look into the life of a pregnant 16 year-old and what she has to go through and what losing the last years of innocence feels like.

Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman are a great team, Diablo Cody wrote an amazing script with quirky, unforgettable dialogue and Jason Reitman directed the actors to perform the scenes to make the audience laugh but make them still remember the drama that is behind the comedy.



But it's not just the director and writer who make the film fantastic. It's also the performances.

Ellen Page plays the 16 year-old Juno. And I was amazed that such a young woman could deliver such a powerhouse performance. She could go from Comedy to Drama in such little time. Also the subtle expressions show on her face and the reality of the performance is just unbeleivable. I could have sworn that she was just making up those lines while she was going because she was so raw and real. That is what I love about the performance.

Armed with unforgettable performances and dialogue. Juno is one of the best and most heart-warming movies of 2007! This film picked up 4 Oscar Nominations. One of those was Diablo Cody's best Original Screenplay which she won.

Todays Movie Review! Persepolis!

Hey you guys! Todays movie review will be about Marjane Satrapi's independant, french animated movie, Persepolis.

You moght have been glancing some Top Ten Critics Lists and saw the starnge title Persepolis. Persepolis, By Marjane Satrapi.

Majestic, Powerful, Dark, gorgeous, Subtle, and Sass are a few words to describe this wonderfully made french movie. This movie follows the story of Marjane Satrapi who lived in Iran as a child during the Iranian Revolution. Then leaving the country as a young woman because of the danger.

This movie is fantastically done. Unlike most animated movies nowadays, this movie is in Black and white and in 2-D. Even though its not like Finding Nemo in a sense of hilarity, it's still a very good movie.

The emotion that is portrayed in the movie is pure magic. When Marjane is sad or happy, the director chose to turn things up a notch or make things larger than life. One example is when Marjane hits Puberty. I will let you guys watch the movie to see what happens. I also really liked the script of this film. At some parts it made you laugh, other parts cry and other parts make you feel what Marjane is feeling. This movie gives us a different way to see footage of the Iranian Revolution even though it might be fiction.

Washed up, sad, happy, betrayed, alone are all of the emotions that run throught your heart and mind while this film is playing. It makes you feel what it must have been like to leave your family in times of war to go to some place completely different, starting all over again.

There is nothing more I can say about this movie. Magical. I guess is the word to best describe it. Magical, I guess is the word to best describe life at its finest or when you feel horrible. No matter how you feel, life is still a majestic and magical ride.

This film picked up an Oscar Nomination for Best Animated Feature. It was loved by Critics and audiences alike. It is truly one of my most favorite movies if the past decade. Marjane Satrapi hits a high note in this independant War drama.

Sorry I havn't been posting! TODAYS REVIEW- Atonement

Hey you guys! Today's review will be about Joe Wright captivating Romantic, War Drama, Atonement.Atonement tells the story of Brioney Tallis's false thoughts about events that she witnesses. She thinks she sees something that she comprehends but she actually doesn't comprehend it. When she sees something horrible, she tells the police and it wrecks the lives oh her sister Cecilia and Cecilia's lover, Robbie.

This movie is one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of cinema I have seen in a while. Joe Wright and Christopher Hampton adapt what is one of the most sought after books ever made into a masterpiece filled with powerful performances. Joe wright does not only show us events and emotions but tells the actors to show deep and powerful emotion so they can connect with the audience.

There have only been a few fantastic child performances in cinematic history, such as, Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense and Tatum O' Niel in Paper moon. Saorise Ronan, age 12, gives us such a powerful performance that I didn't know was possible to perform or comprehend by a child, But Soarise does it. She blew me away as the youngest Brioney. She hit every emotion to perfection. She added facial expressions with hard-hitting lines, some that even make the movie for me. Personally I thought it was one of the best performances of 2007. She is the one to keep an eye on in the future.





Romola Garai and Vaness Redgrave play the other versions of Brioney. They each gave fantastic performances! I knew that Redgrave was going to be amazing but I was very surprised and pleased with Romola Garai's performance. You can tell she was very passionate about the movie. She also gives this one look when she is carrying someone on a stretcher. That look is one of the highlights of the performance. The fright that shows in her face is amazing.




The 2 leads, Keira Knightly and James McAvoy gave wonderful performances. Keira as a distressed woman who can't see her love but she would do anything to see him for even 1 minute. And James playing frightened and agitated young man who gets sent away for something he didn't do. There chemistry was great and they both dominated. Great job.

The cinematography and musical score in this film are top notch. Go listen to some of the music right now. Because it is some of the most hauntingly beautiful music I have heard in recent years.

Armed with a great cast, director and crew. This film gives us a look into the destroyed lives of 2 lovers.

So here is the premise...Centers on a young girl who has been murdered and watches over her family - and her killer - from heaven. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal.

To me this looks good. It's completely different from LOTR so I want to see how Paeter Jackson can handle it.

Todays Review! FROZEN RIVER!

Tonight I am going to talk to you about Courtney Hunt's independent Drama, Frozen River.

With direction and performances so powerful and beautiful ,this movie is one of those genuinely good movies that are really hard to find these days. It is an independent film so it did not come to most theatres but it is out on DVD right now, so I urge you to go to any store where you can buy or rent DVDs and buy it... or rent it.

In her directorial debut, Courtney Hunt follows a woman's life a week before Christmas. Ray Eddy, a mother with 2 children is caught in between a crime. The crime, illegally smuggling immigrants across the border. She does this to get money for her 2 children so she can buy a new house and Christmas presents.

This film gives us a very realistic showing of what a mother would do for her kids. Courtney Hunt takes a simple concept and turns it into a powerful world where dreams can come true but sometimes you have to pay a price.

Almost unknown to Hollywood, Mellisa Leo leaps out of the clouds and gives one of the most incredible performances of the year. Dramatic and commanding of every scene and character she comes across, Mellisa Leo draws us into the story and makes us think and feel. She also confronts people with such power that when I was watching the film, I got shivers crawling through my spine. A truly career-defining performance indeed. There is a time in the film where Ray is talking to a police officer. I will not wreck it for you but, the hard-hitting drama that pours out of Leo's mouth was more than I could handle. Once again a truly remarkable performance by Leo.

The supporting cast of a film, is what keeps the film together. And the supporting cast of THIS film does just that.

Charlie Mcdermott, who plays T.J Ray's son, gives a great performance. A performance that will surely get him noticed by Hollywood. i hope that I see more of him in the future because I see a lot of potential in this guy.

Misty Uphman, who played Lila, is also one of the ones to watch in this film. In her first major film role, Misty gives a subtly haunting and brilliant performance. Trying to keep up with Leo in this film must have been hard work, but Misty kept up. Hitting every line with emotion.

Courtney Hunt's screenplay is one of my favorites of the year. She gives you characters that you can eat from the inside out. She dives into the story quickly and diversely and she also fits in the characters lives and histories without cutting to a scene that is something completely different! Congrats Courtney!

This film picked up 2 Oscar nominations. 1 for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Mellisa Leo and 1 for Courtney Hunt's Original Screenplay. It also picked up a handful of critics awards for Leo.

I recommend this movie to all. 9/10

Why is it anticipated? It's done by the Oscar Nominated Director of The Thin Red Line, also it's Sean Penns next film after the 2008 political film, Milk. (please see review at the bottom of the blog!)

So here's the premise...The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence.

Personally, i'm really excited about this. It sounds like a fantastic drama which stars one of Hollywoods best actors, Sean Penn.

I am going to see this movie when it comes out and I hope you guys will to!

Todays Movie Review! WALTZ WITH BASHIR

Hey you guys! Todays movie review will Ari Folmans Waltz with Bashir or in isreali Vals im Bashir.

Waltz with Bashir is an Isreali War Documentary by director Ari Folman. It follows Folman, an isreali war veteran. He goes to a bar to talk to his old friend about a recurring dream that he keeps having. The dream his friend keeps having is that he is being chased through the streets of Lebanon by a pack of 26 vicious dogs. It turns out that this dream is being caused by awful memories of him having to shoot 26 guard dogs during the Lebanon war.

Bringing up the war made Folman try to remember about the events that he had experienced during the Lebanon War. Strangely enough he has no memories of those times.

That night he has a dream of the Lebanon War. Him and his 2 Friends, who he can not identify, rise up from the water. Completely naked. They walk into the city, put clothes on and walk into an immense crowd. The dream ends after that. That had been his first dream or memory of the Lebanon War. So he goes to his friend, who is a psychologist, to see how he can remember or to see if he has a problem with his memory. His friend explains it simply...

"That dream that you had, he said, could not have even happened in real life at all. Sometimes when children have memories of their childhood they remember stuff that didn't even happen at all. Say a child has a memory of the circus. They could have only had a memory of them eating a cone of cotton candy. But as they grow up they hear different stories about clowns and rides and when they remember it again it could be changed by stories of others."

Folman, knows he remembers this memory so he sets of on an adventure to talk to other War veterans about their memories to see if he can remember any of his times in the war.

This film is beautifully made. Folman does not only tell us of other veterans dreams and memories, but shows us them in his own creative way. A way that I or many other people could have pictured it. He also shows us the atrocities of war, by animation. He shows us what the soldiers did to Innocent people. He also speaks of the time when Bashir was running for president. But assassinated the day after.

This film teaches us about thought and memory and war. About one man who is desperate to find out what he did in the Lebanon war but when he finds out he does not feel the excitement. He feels the suffering of other people.

With a beautiful screenplay, score this film is a must see animated documentary. This film is in subtitles though. The animation is beautifull done and I have truly not seen any other film like this gem. This film will be remembered.

Congratulations Folman on the wonderful job and congratulations on the Oscar Nomination.

Hey you guys! Today I am going to be talking about another of 2009's most anticipated films, The Inglourious Basterds.

Why is it anticipated?
Well it is a Quentin Tarantino Movie. If you don't know who he is, he directed Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs. Also Brad Pitt is in it and its about World War II/Nazis.

So here's the premise...In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers.

Sounds good to me! Plus it's tarantino!

Todays Review! RACHEL GETTING MARRIED

Hey! Tonight's review will be about Jonathan Demme's new film "Rachel Getting Married"

When I went to see this movie, I had high expectations. I expected a Tour De Force performance by Anne Hathaway. I expected a fantastic drama by Jonathan Demme. Do you want to know what happened? All of my expectations were fulfilled. I got a deep and dramatic film by the highly acclaimed director of Silence of The Lambs. Anne Hathaway gave an Oscar worthy performance as the Alcoholic, 9-months sober Kym. She makes the audience feel what she is feeling. Making what sounds like sarcasm into pure, raw emotion.

Rachel Getting Married is a stunning, independent, drama that speaks straight to the heart.This film centers around Kym. A young woman who has been in and out of rehab for years. She "checks out" of the center to go witness her sister, Rachel's (Rosemarie Dewitt), wedding.

Facing neglection from her mother and over protection from her father. Kym can't help but to be overwhelmed. Then she meets Kieran. Kieran is the best man and also goes to the same recovery class as Kym. Kym falls in love with Kieran. But as the movie passes. Kym gets more sarcastic and annoying. She wants to "help" so much that she begins to embarrass Rachel.

There is a time in the reception hall, where friends and family are saying their speeches. Then it's Kyms turn. Kym begins her speech. She tries desperately to fit in with the family. She wants to fit in. She wants to become friends with them.

There is a time in her speech where she tells a joke. Noone laughs and Kym gives the most awkward look. The most scared and sad look. She feels like she can't fit in with this family. This group of people.

This film has a very strong supporting cast. Including Bill Irwin as Kyms Father, Debra Winger as Kyms Mother and Rosemerie Dewitt as Rachel.

Debra Winger gives a stunningly perfect 8-minute performance. Abby had been neglecting her daughter for an event that wrecked her life. She had not talked to her for years until the wedding. At the reception, Kym finally speaks to her mother. The conversation is powerful. But you really have to dig deep to find the power in it. When I first saw it, I had only thought that it was an awkward, mother-daughter conversation. But after, I started to think of the conversation. When you think of it, you think of how important that conversation is.

Rosemarie Dewitt gives a fantastic breakthrough performance. She plays wife-to-be Rachel. I personally LOVED her performance with a passion. I found her funny and raw. She actually played it like she hadn't read the script just said what she thought of her sister. She plays it like real-life, and that is what I love about the performance.

This film picked up numerous Critics awards for Anne Hathaway. It also picked up an Oscar Nomination for Hathaway.

I highly recommend this movie. 9/10

It IS Marion Cotillards next movie! We wanna see how she does with an english role.

Johnny Depp. 'Nuff said. Also a gangster drama.

This movie doesn't seem like my kind of movie. I am not a fan of Gangster Dramas. But there is nothing wrong with trying something new! Here is the premise..

The Feds are attempting to take down the notorious American Gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a a huge crime wave in the 1930s.

Sounds like a decent film. But not my cup of tea. We will see how things go though.

Why it's anticipated...

Pixars next big film! Might be a bigger hit than WALL-E. Seems like one of the funniest to come out in 2009. I think it will appeal to all audiences, Kids and Adults. So here is the premise...

After tying thousands of balloons to the top of his house Carl Fredrickson goes on his life long dream to see the wild of South America. But he is not alone. A young boy named Russell stows away in his house and joins along the adventure!

Personally, I can't wait for this movie. As soon as I saw the trailer I feel in love with it. It looks hilarious! I can't wait for May 29!

Tonights review will be....

DOUBT
Doubt follows Sister Alouysious Bouvier. A strict nun who is the principal of a catholic school. The preist, Father Flynn starts spending an awful lot of time with a young black boy named Donald Miller. Sister James a shy priest witnesses Father Flynn take the boy into the Rectory to discuss a "Private Matter". After he is done. He comes back to class she smells Alcohol on Donalds breath. Sister James begins to wonder and worry. She reports this to Sister Alouysious. Sister A. Soon develops suspicions that Father Flynn is sexually harassing the young boy. But Father Flynn dinies it.

This film is adapted from the stageplay by John Patrick Shanley who also directed and wrote the film. This film stars 2 time Academy Awards Winner Meryl Streep, Academy Award Winner Philip Seymour Hoffman and Academy Award Nominees Amy Adams and Viola Davis (Who received her first nomination from this film).

This movie is filled with powerhouse performances from the whole cast. Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman give deep and terrifying performances and Amy Adams gives a subtle and frightened performance and Viola Davis gives a 12 minute powerhouse lesson on acting.

"Doubt is a bond as powerful as certainty" Father Flynn speaks. That line hits the audience hard because it makes you think. What is Sister A. going through in her head right now? This film also makes you question. Did Father Flynn molest the boy? Was he simply talking to him? What clues did Sister A. have? All those questions lead up to something but you never find out what it is. It is up to you to decide.

Doubt is an entertaining and powerful movie. Makes you think listen and question. I reccomend this movie to all who love putting together pieces of a puzzle and comingup with your own decisions. 8/10

MILK
Milk is a powerful film done by a powerful director. Gus van Sant brings the life of Harvey Milk to the big screen. Harvey Milk was the first ever openly gay man to be elected for Major Office. This films shows the rough events and times he had to go through to fight for what believes in. Harvey Milk is unfortunately not with us anymore. He was assasinated by Dan White. The message was sent out to the people of San Fransisco and they marched. Marched for the man that saved them and made their lives a better place.

Sean Penn gives a pitch perfect performance as Harvey Milk. Matching every manerism and speaking his voice. And he touched the audiences heart and that is the sign of a truly great performance. This film also stars an all-star supporting cast of Josh Brolin as Dan White, Emile Hersch as Cleeve Jones and James Franco as Scott. All these people one of the best performances of their careers.

This film has moments that make you feel. Feel the lives of the people that fought. When you watch this movie you are put in the perspective of the gay people that faced danger every day wondering if they would get shot or arrested. Do you want to know why they could have gotten shot or arrested? Because they are different! But people are people! It is not there fault! Being gay is not a disease, it is not a mental illness. It is a strength. To show that you can accept yourself for who YOU are. And hopefully everyone else will take that advice and accept people for who THEY are.

This film picked up 2 academy Awards. One for best adapted screenplay and one Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading role for Sean Penn. It was also nominated for 6 more including best picture.

I Urge you all to rent this movie. But this movie! See it. Change the way you feel. Make yourself feel the pain that they once had to go through and are still going through now.

This film is a flawless peice of art done by Director Gus Van Sant! 10/10
